Fire in Manhattan Subway Injures 14 and Disrupts Commute

A fire on a maintenance train in Lower Manhattan early Tuesday injured 14 people and disrupted subway services for morning commuters, the authorities said.

The fire was reported after 2 a.m. at the Astor Place station, the New York Fire Department said. The blaze was on a vacuum train, which clears debris from the subway tracks.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority warned of disruptions before the morning rush on Tuesday. A stretch of the Lexington Avenue line, which is served by the 4, 5 and 6 trains, was suspended for several hours between Grand Central and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.

As of around 7 a.m., it had reopened with severe delays, the M.T.A. said.

The cause of the fire was unclear. Eight of the injured people were M.T.A. workers, and six were firefighters, the Fire Department said. Most of the injuries were minor, though two people sustained moderate but non-life-threatening injuries, it said. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at around 5:30 a.m.
