Why Carey Mulligan bans music at home despite being married to Mumford & Sons singer

“There will be time” for music — just not at Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford’s home.

The Mumford & Sons frontman revealed the “Promising Young Woman” actress “doesn’t like” music playing in their home because the tunes distract the singer from holding conversation with the family.

“I can’t do background music because, if music’s on, I want to lean in and listen to it, and I can’t switch that part of my brain off,” he explained on the “SmartLess” podcast‘s July 27 episode. “So then Carey doesn’t like having music in the house because I just stop having a conversation.”

“We had this conversation the other day,” he continued to hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett. “We had a party at home. It was Carey’s birthday, and someone came, and they were like, ‘There’s no music.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t really play music as background.’”

Mumford, 39, added that when music comes on, he becomes quiet and distracted, only snapping out of his state when the “Great Gatsby” actress, 41, says, “You’ve gone.”

“Let’s turn it off then, I guess,” Mumford recalled saying.

Mumford also divulged on the podcast that despite meeting as children at a Bible camp when they were children, the couple lost touch over the years until a chance encounter.

The Grammy winner stated that his now-wife “booked a ticket to a Laura Marling show” in which, unbeknownst to her, he was performing.

After a quick reunion between the two former pals, Mumford said Mulligan “left a note with our tour manager with her email address on it” — a move for which he dubbed the actress “a classy broad.”

The note sparked a romance that led to marriage in 2012.

The couple now share three children — daughter Evelyn, 10; son Wilfred 8; and a daughter, whose name the couple hasn’t disclosed, born in 2023.

Mumford & Sons released their latest album, “Prizefighter,” in February of this year and are currently touring the United States.

Mulligan, meanwhile, starred in “Beef” Season 2 earlier this year and lends her voice to the animated film “Wildwood” later this year and will be on the big screen in Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” in early 2027.
