Ukraine suffers highest civilian casualties of the war in four years, with kids among latest killed

Ukraine suffered its highest monthly number of civilian casualties in the last four years of war, according to Kyiv, with children among the latest killed and wounded Sunday.

Russia has killed at least 377 civilians and left some 2,129 injured so far in July, marking the deadliest month since April 2022, soon after the invasion, Kyiv said.

Russia’s latest attack on Sunday saw one person killed in Kharkiv after a drone struck a residential building, with nine others wounded, including two children, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X.

An adult and a 10-year-old child were also killed after a Russian drone attack hit a supermarket in Chernihiv on Sunday, according to local officials.

“This is deliberate Russian terror that has no military justification,” Zelensky said of the latest attacks.

Moscow has been ramping up its assaulton civilian infrastructure following increasingly successful Ukrainian attacks across the border, with Russia firing more than 34,000 drones, guided aerial bombs and ballistic missiles in the last week alone, Kyiv said.

Although Ukraine’s offenses have evolved and caused a string of humiliations for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kyiv’s defenses are still marred by a lack of interceptor missiles.

Sunday’s assault saw Russia fire at least 8 missiles and 136 drones across Ukraine, with some of the projectiles getting through in Kyiv, Kherson, Donetsk, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Sumy, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Chernihiv regions.

“We must undercut Russia’s gamble on ballistic terror. That is why it is so important that deliveries of anti-ballistic defense packages arrive on time,” Zelensky said.

“Every interceptor missile right now is literally helping save lives if it is here, in Ukrainian systems, not in our partners’ warehouses,” he added.

The need for interceptors has led Zelensky to try to speed up a deal with President Trump that would grant Ukraine a license to manufacturethe much-needed Patriot missile interceptors.

Zelensky said Thursday that US aerospace and defense company Raytheon was willing to help build the missiles needed when the license deal goes through.
