The Jewish man stabbed by a maniac repeatedly yelling “Allahu Akbar”on the Upper West Side recently moved from NYC to Florida — reportedly in part because of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s anti-Israel stance and lackluster handling of rampant antisemitism in the Big Apple.
Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, 50, who was allegedly stabbed in the chest by screwdriver-wielding madman Raul Morales on Thursday when he walked out of a synagogue at Amsterdam Avenue and West 86th Street, recently ditched NYC for Surfside, near Miami.
He was back in Gotham for a few days this week to clean out his apartment, a source said.
At least part of his decision to say goodbye to the city for good was partially over frustrations with Mamdani, a source told JNS.
Neighbors on Saturday told The Post they understood why Grunhaus, who is religious and a passionate supporter if the Jewish state, would leave NYC.
“It makes sense, honestly,” a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous told The Post Saturday. “I mean, given the hatred that is being spoken by our mayor about towards the Jewish community, he’s not welcoming. He’s not encouraging people to be proud of their Judaism here, and it’s very obvious.”
The neighbor continued: “I mean, we all know what he was screaming when he attacked those people. He said, ‘Allahu Akbar So, like, are you kidding me?
Added another: “I think the mayor is definitely aggravating the negative side of it. He’s saying things that he doesn’t have the authority to say. Like he wants to arrest the Prime Minister of Israel. “People who wear kippahs definitely have to be more cautious.”
Grunhaus’ recent Facebook posts focus on rampant antisemitism in Gotham, often tagging Mamdani while re-posting people’s stories of the anti-Jewish-hatred they’ve experienced.
“I hope your kids die,” a June 28 re-post from the Israeli Consulate read, telling the story of a Jewish man who was confronted by a stranger in NYC. “That’s what a stranger said to Rami Feinstein and his family in broad daylight in New York. Not online. Not anonymously. In the middle of a New York street. This is what antisemitism looks like when hatred becomes acceptable, normalized and ignored.”
Other posts mourn the 1,200 Israelis slaughtered by Hamas in the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attacks.
“Standing here @ Mount Herzl Cemetery 2 years after the October 7th massacre (Hebrew calendar, day after but first day of funerals for the nation),” Grunhaus wrote in October 2025.
“Commemorating our heroes who were the first of many to sacrifice their lives to protect our nation. Never Again!”
In another post a month later, Grunhaus posted the photos of two Israeli hostages in Hamas captivity.
Mamdani, who has been ripped for waiting a day after the attack to finally offer up a tepid response, did the same Saturday, telling The Post at an unrelated event in The Bronx: There’s no tolerance for bigotry, and we know that while Jewish New Yorkers constitute a minority in this city.
“This is a city that will not only look to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe, but also look to celebrate and cherish Jewish New Yorkers.”
Jewish New Yorkers are not convinced.
A rally organized by the group End Jew Hatred is planned for Sunday at 10 a.m. at 509 Amsterdam to “unite against hate on the Upper West Side” — and call out Mamdani.
“Blood is on Mamdani’s hands,” a flyer for the rally posted to X reads.
Jews who live in NYC “are on edge,” said Yitz Landes, 37, professor at the Jewish Theology Seminary of America.
His mother lives in the building next door to Grunhaus’ apartment.
Like Grunhaus, Landes said he “always wear a kippa in the city. I would feel weird not to. I don’t want to give up wearing it publicly, and I hope I can continue to do it.”
Morales, an ex-con who minutes before allegedly attacking Grunhaus allegedly stabbed 57-year-old Chok Sung a few blocks away, was arraigned on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault and one count of attempted assault — all of which are being tried as hate crimes.
The judge also ordered Morales to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is due back in court on July 30.
Both victims are stable. Sung remains hospitalized but Grunhaus was released Friday.
