Freddy Cannon, an early rocker whose raw, booming voice propelled hit records like “Palisades Park” and “Tallahassee Lassie” in the 1950s and ’60s — and who recorded his most recent song only a few months ago — died on Friday in Oxnard, Calif. He was 89.
His death, at a hospice facility, was caused by bladder cancer, said Tom Cuddy, a longtime friend and program director at iHeartRadio in New York.
Mr. Cannon, known as Boom Boom, rose to stardom in an era teeming with clean-cut teen idols like Fabian, Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell.
“I’m not any of those,” he told the Classic Bands website in 2011. “I’m a rock ’n’ roll act.”
He added: “I don’t have a great voice, but I’ll tell you something right now, I’ll rock with the best out there live onstage.”
“Tallahassee Lassie” was his favorite song, in part because it began with a poem, “She’s My Rock and Roll Baby,” written by his mother, Antoinette (Rosetti) Picariello. In 1958, she asked her son to set it to music. Mr. Cannon, a guitarist, recorded it in a studio with his band, Freddy Karmon & the Hurricanes, for $35.
At Swan Records, the producers Bob Crewe and Frank Slay changed the title and rewrote most of the lyrics. But they preserved the melody and some of the words, including the centerpiece of the song:
Well, she’s romping to the drag The cha-cha, rag-a-mop Stomping to the shag Rocks the bunny hop.
He also discovered that he had a new surname — he was now Freddy Cannon — when he opened a box of “Tallahassee Lassie” 45’s and saw that Swan had renamed him.
“They didn’t even ask me if they could change my name, they just did it!” he wrote in his memoir, “Where the Action Is!” (2011, with Mark Bego). “Actually, I couldn’t have cared less, as long as they released my record.”
The song, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1959, was followed by the success of “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans,” a Tin Pan Alley tune once recorded by Al Jolson, which rose to No. 3 in early 1960.
“Palisades Park,” his best-known song, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard chart in 1962, tells the story of teenagers falling in love at the 38-acre amusement park in Fort Lee and Cliffside Park, N.J.
“You’ll never know how great a kiss can feel, when you stop at the top of a Ferris wheel,” Mr. Cannon sang. “When I fell in love, down at Palisades Park.”
The song, originally called “Amusement Park,” was written by Chuck Barris, who would later be known as a game-show producer and host of “The Gong Show.” At Swan, the title was changed to “Palisades Park,” and the music was mixed with the sound effects of a roller coaster and a midway calliope.
The song elevated the amusement park’s profile. And the park’s owner, Irving Rosenthal, managed to resolve a problem for the record, which was already climbing the Top 40: Murray Kaufman — the influential disc jockey known as Murray the K at the New York radio station WINS — balked, for some reason, at playing it.
Because Mr. Rosenthal was running ads for his amusement park on WINS — “to the tune of $100,000 annually,” Mr. Cannon wrote in his memoir — he gave the radio station’s general manager a call.
“Irving hangs up the phone, turns the radio on and tunes it to WINS,” Mr. Cannon wrote. “We sat there and listened to Murray the K announcing, ‘What a great record: ‘Palisades Park!’”
During his hit-making days, Mr. Cannon appeared more times than any other artist on “American Bandstand,” hosted by Dick Clark. He also recorded Action,” the up-tempo theme song to the musical show “Where the Action Is,” likewise hosted by Mr. Clark. Mr. Cannon also toured in shows promoted by Mr. Clark.
Frederick Anthony Picariello Jr. was born on Dec. 4, 1936, in Revere, Mass., and grew up mostly in nearby Lynn. His father, Frederick Sr., drove a laundry truck and played trumpet in local bands. His mother ran the home and also earned money doing odd jobs like fixing eyeglass frames for an optical company.
After “Palisades Park,” Mr. Cannon continued recording, but with more modest success. For a time, he worked as a record promoter.
In the mid-1970s, he had a revival, like many artists, in oldies shows promoted by Richard Nader. In 1981, he released “Let’s Put the Fun Back in Rock N Roll,” backed by the Belmonts, Dion’s former group. It settled at No. 81, his last charted Billboard hit.
The actor David Julian Hirsh sang “Palisades Park” in “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” a 2002 film adapted from Mr. Barris’s 1984 autobiography of the same name.
In 2011, when the Rolling Stones released a deluxe version of their 1978 album “Some Girls,” it included a 1970s recording of their cover of “Tallahassee Lassie.” Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone magazine in 1995 that the song had partly inspired his writing of “Brown Sugar.”
Mr. Cannon celebrated this recognition by writing “Covered by the Rolling Stones,” which he released in 2012. He told The Daily Item of Lynn, Mass., that “to have influenced that band with a little song that I wrote with my mother 50 years ago is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Mr. Cannon married Jeanette Guidara in 1955. She died in 2024. He is survived by a daughter, Conny Weber; a son, Billy Picariello; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lou Bjelke. Another son, John Picariello, died earlier this year.
In February, Mr. Cannon rented a studio near his home in Oxnard and hired musicians to record “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” an upbeat single that sounds as if it could have been released in 1959. It reached No. 15 on the most recent Heritage Chart in Britain, where listeners vote on new singles by so-called legendary artists.
“He was in good health until the last month,” his friend Mr. Cuddy said. “And he always felt it important to keep making music.”
