President Donald Trump didn’t want to go to Canada’s party anyway, he told the nation Friday.
Trump declared on Truth Social was “fine” Friday after Canadian officials told his administration to skip an international bridge opening ceremony in Michigan — then proceeded to boast about the tariffs.
“Canada disinvited the United States of America to the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which is fine, considering they are paying substantial TARIFFS to the United States, but the original Deal on the Bridge, which was terribly negotiated by a previous Administration, no longer stands,” Trump wrote.
“We changed the terms of the Deal so that the United States of America now gets 50% of the Profit. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The bridge opening ceremony was originally planned to feature both U.S. and Canada officials, but following Trump’s recent 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, Canadian officials have since asked the U.S. officials not to attend the event.
“In light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries,” said Jenna Ghassabeh, the spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, in an emailed statement to the Associated Press.
Earlier Friday, Politico reported Friday night’s White House Correspondents Dinner is expected to have terrible turnout because journalists are tired of Trump.
“It’s just exhausting,” one journalist said.
