Country singer Aaron Lee Tasjan claimed several fans walked out of his concert after he performed his politically charged song “I Love America Better Than You” — prompting him to warn of the country’s “descent into fracture.”
Tasjan estimated that eight concertgoers got up and left during his show at 1859 St. Joseph’s Church in Galveston, Texas, because they were “very clearly put off by the messages” in the lyrics, the 39-year-old wrote on Facebook after the incident.
The song references a range of political and cultural issues, with a reference to President Barack Obama, the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, immigration and transgender rights.
Tasjan sings, “I love America better than you / Her founding mothers and her hotdogs too / First Black president / Insurrectionists / I love America better than you,” before ending with, “I love America better than you / Her crowded cities and her hotdogs too / Land of immigrants / Queer Trans feminists / I love America better than you.”
The Nashville-based musician addressed the walkout in his Facebook post two days later.
“Towards the end of ‘I Love America Better Than You’ during my show, 8 people who were very clearly put off by the messages in the song got up and walked out of my show,” Tasjan wrote.
“For artists, I think it’s very important to remember that our job is not simply to sell tickets and t-shirts and receive applause. To me, the main part of what we do is to create works that affect the listener.”
Tasjan said he respected the concertgoers’ decision to walk out but argued that music should challenge listeners rather than simply entertain them.
“For me, I believe in the medicinal properties of songs,” he wrote. “I think songs can serve the function of healing, reminding, and comforting, but most importantly, telling the truth.”
Tasjan went on to explain the meaning behind “I Love America Better Than You,” which he released in 2024 as part of his “Stellar Evolution” album.
“In my song, I sing about all of us. It’s not criticism but illumination. It doesn’t point fingers, it states plainly what it is and leaves room for questions,” he said.
“So I appreciate all 8 of the folks who walked out of my concert for exercising their free will, and at the same time, I invite all of us to continue to reflect on our own values as the values of the individual paint a picture of the values of our country,” he continued.
Tasjan ended his post by warning that avoiding uncomfortable conversations will deepen the country’s divisions.
“The time to remain comfortable is gone. If we choose only to walk away from that which makes us uncomfortable, we subject ourselves to an embittered stagnation or worse, a descent into fracture,” he wrote.
Tasjan, who blends country, Americana and indie rock, has released six studio albums and earned a 2022 Grammy nomination for Best American Roots Song for “Diamond Studded Shoes.”
His comments come as musicians continue to face backlash over bringing politics into their performances.
Bruce Springsteen has repeatedly criticized President Trump during his “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour this year, prompting Trump to call Springsteen a “dried up prune.”
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger recently suggested audiences don’t come to concerts to hear political speeches.
“You don’t want to lecture them,” Jagger said when asked about Springsteen’s onstage remarks, saying his job is to give fans “the best time they possibly can.”
