GOP lawmakers flee reporter’s questions about ‘grotesque’ Trump-endorsed candidate

GOP lawmakers ran away from a reporter who asked them about a Trump-endorsed congressional candidate who made “grotesque” comments.

During an episode of Bulwark Takes, political commentators Sam Stein and Will Sommer called out “MAGA gun YouTuber” Brandon Herrera, who’s running for former Rep. Tony Gonzales‘ congressional seat in Texas with an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

In Herrera’s YouTube videos, he praises “the guy who killed Hitler” and makes explicit comments about Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts that Stein and Sommer described as “grotesque.” He’s running in a “tossup district in Texas, so it’s not like this is a safe seat,” Sommer said.

“It’s kind of crazy that he’s not being thrown or being pushed out by Republicans,” Sommer continued. “Everyone’s going off on Graham Platner for doing horrible things, rightfully so, but like you know that this stuff that we just played from Herrera seems just as bad and yet no one’s condemning him.”

In that context, Sommer and Stein sent a reporter to Capitol Hill to ask Texas congressmen about Herrera, specifically his “grotesque” remarks about Watts.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) was the first one shown being asked about Herrera’s comments, but before the reporter could finish his question, Roy said “I gotta go,” and ran off, which made Sommer and Stein crack up.

When Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) was asked, he refused to say anything at all and bolted up the Capitol steps. “No?” the reporter asked as Jackson left.

The reporter then went up to Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), who seemed like he was going to answer, but when Herrera’s remark was repeated, Nehls threw up his hands and turned away.
