Last weekend, “The Odyssey” inspired film enthusiasts around the globe to leave the house and happily head to the theater, settling in for the Christopher Nolan-directed epic that raked in $264 million worldwide.
But these moviegoers probably weren’t expecting to see a trailer that scared the living daylights out of them, with many posting about their terror.
“Did anyone else get traumatized by the Other Mommy trailer with Jessica Chastain before The Odyssey?” one asked. “It should be illegal to put a horror movie trailer with a jump scare before a non-horror movie,” one representative TikToker declared, while another joked that they were starting a support group.
The “Other Mommy” trailer starts out with a gentle piano soundtrack as Chastain’s character arrives home to her adorable young daughter, who is holding a carton of ice cream. But everything implodes a few seconds later, leading to a jump scare that caught many viewers — who thought they were maybe watching an ice cream commercial — completely off guard.
This sparked arguments on social media, with some saying that the trailer wasn’t even that scary, and that this was just a successful viral marketing gimmick. Indeed, “Other Mommy” is a Universal film, just like “The Odyssey” — but that doesn’t mean the trailer didn’t terrify quite a few people. And on Tuesday, the studio helpfully dropped the trailer online to scare everyone, not just theater attendees.
