One Person Fatally Shot Overnight Near Santa Monica Pier

The police said they were investigating the fatal shooting of an adult early on Monday near the famous pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

The city said in a statement on Monday that officers from the Santa Monica Police Department were dispatched just after 12:30 a.m. to investigate a possible shooting at Parking Lot 1 North, at 1550 Pacific Coast Highway, next to the north side of the Santa Monica Pier.

With its carousel, Ferris wheel, tourist attractions and views of the Southern California coastline, the pier is one of the state’s best known landmarks.

The police said they found an adult with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead, the statement said.

A preliminary investigation “indicates that a physical altercation occurred between two groups” before the shooting, it said.

The city did not identify the victim.

The statement said there were no arrests and the circumstances that led to the shooting were under investigation.
