GOP has ‘moved on’ as Trump’s own party ignores ‘mess’ of a speech: report

Trump uncorks wild theory about ‘manufactured illegal ballots’ during national speech

Donald Trump’s much-hyped prime-time address to the nation , centering on his 2020 election loss last week, fell flat with his own party’s lawmakers who are pretending it never happened, according to a report.

Despite White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s breathless promises that the speech would be “shocking,” the address generated minimal enthusiasm beyond Trump’s immediate circle, according to the Washington Post. By the weekend, even conservative influencers and Republican lawmakers who had initially promoted the president’s talking points “had seemingly moved” on to other topics, according to the newspaper.

The muted response reflects political reality on the ground, the Post reported. “Many Republicans facing voters this fall have shown little interest in making Trump’s renewed focus on the 2020 electioncentral to their campaigns as they head into a midterm complicated by the president’s weak standing with independent voters,” it claimed.

When Fox News largely ignored the address the morning after, the contrast became apparent. GOP Senate candidate Michael Whatley, Trump’s chosen nominee in competitive North Carolina, held a 34-minute campaign event that pivoted away from the president’s message entirely. Whatley emphasized economic opportunity, military strength, and public safety—notably absent was any discussion of election fraud.

“If candidates are not talking about the economy, if candidates are not talking about affordability, if they’re not talking about how they’re going to make people’s lives at home cheaper and less expensive, then they’re not talking about the issues that voters care about,” Paul Shumaker, a veteran Republican strategist told the Post.

Trump’s speech presented no new evidence, made unsubstantiated claims, and failed to mobilize the Republican base. Former Donald Trump State Department appointee Matthew Bartlett characterized it as a “mess” that undermined Trump’s broader push for passage of his SAVE America Act—legislation he has “oddly weaponized against his own party.”

The prevailing sentiment among Republicans appears to be one of relief that Trump’s message didn’t break through, the Post reported. “If the president makes outrageous claims about an election and no one is listening, did it even happen?” Bartlett quipped.
