‘The dots connect’: Ex-prosecutor flags 5 red alerts in week from hell for Trump

Former federal prosecutor Joyce White Vance argued that this week’s most consequential legal stories aren’t isolated events — they’re a single, coordinated pattern of democratic erosion the press keeps covering in pieces.

In a Substack analysis cross-posted to Bluesky and X, Vance identified five interlocking stories she insists must be read as a whole — the push to hold the Trump administration in contempt, Musk’s legal exposure in Wisconsin’s recent election, the Justice Department’s abandonment of white-collar prosecutions and scaled-back ICE oversight, intimidation of election administrators at the state level, and the effort to extradite the Tate brothers to face charges abroad.

“The dots connect. I connect them,” she wrote.

Vance, who served as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 2009 to 2017 and was the first female U.S. Attorney nominated by President Barack Obama, has become one of the most prolific former prosecutors publicly cataloguing what she describes as an assault on the rule of law.

Each of the strands she flagged has its own paper trail, she wrote. In April, a divided D.C. Circuit panel halted Chief Judge James Boasberg’s criminal contempt inquiry into Trump officials over Alien Enemies Act deportation flights, with two Trump appointees calling the probe a “clear abuse of discretion.” Dissenting Judge J. Michelle Childs warned that “the fate of our democratic republic” depends on treating contempt seriously.

On the Musk front, the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission voted 5-1 last week to refer two complaints to the Brown County district attorney, finding probable cause that the billionaire violated state election bribery law by offering $1 million checks to voters during the 2025 state Supreme Court race.

The DOJ pullback Vance cited is also documented. A Public Citizen analysis tallied 145 canceled corporate enforcement actions in Trump’s first year of his second term, sparing companies an estimated $3.1 billion in penalties.

Andrew and Tristan Tate, meanwhile, were arrested by U.S. Marshals in Miami on Saturday on a sealed warrant, as British prosecutors seek their extradition on 59 new charges of rape, sex trafficking and assault.

Read separately, Vance argued, each story is alarming. Read together, she added, they describe a system giving way at once.
