The movie industry appears to have been turned entirely upside down this year. Big-budget supposed studio tentpoles like “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” “Moana” and “Supergirl” have dramatically underperformed, while films like “Obsession” and “Backrooms” — made cheaply by 20-somethings raised on YouTube Shorts — became huge hits. It seems to point to an uncertain future in which the movie theater looks less like a sweeping panorama and more like your laptop screen — or your phone’s.
