Outgoing Sen Thom Tillis (R-NC) just hurled a wrench in the works as President Donald Trump tries to rush through the appointment of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, according to a new report.
Tillis told Blanche to meet with Jeffrey Epstein survivors, something the DOJ official has balked at, before the North Carolina Republican will deign to cast the vote Blanche will need to get out of the committee, according to a new report from Axios.
The demand represents a significant roadblock for Trump’s nominee, Axios reported.
On the narrowly divided Judiciary Committee, even a single Republican defection would tank Blanche’s advancement to a full Senate vote, giving Tillis extraordinary leverage.
During Thursday’s committee hearing, Tillis laid out his conditions, stating, “I have not made a final decision, but Mr. Blanche said very quickly yesterday that he would meet with the Epstein victims today if it could be arranged.”
He added, “[I]t seemed to me that Mr. Blanche was willing to say that he would meet with them — and counsel — I understand the restriction that counsel has to be present, I expect that meeting to occur before I’m willing to vote out of this committee.”
“I’m trying to get to yes, but this is a very important part of getting to yes,” Tillis elaborated. “There should not be any reason why based on what Mr. Blanche said yesterday, if he said that he would do it today, then he can certainly do it over the next two weeks.”
