Former CNN anchor Jim Acosta’s Substack highlighted a concerning moment during President Donald Trump’s Sunday appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” discussing Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) death.
When NBC’s Kristen Welker asked about the Strait of Hormuz, contradicting the administration’s claim it was open despite Iranian officials declaring it closed, Trump refused to discuss it.
“I don’t want to talk about it because I want to honor the life of Lindsey Graham,” Trump said.
“So I don’t want to talk about it. I told you that before the call!”
Welker complied, saying “Yeah,” and pivoted back to Graham.
Acosta’s newsletter reacted to the interview on his Substack, “That sounds an awful lot like there were demands set in exchange for this interview that were consistent with what went down on CNN.”
“It also seems like even if those demands weren’t explicitly agreed to – although Welker did say ‘Yeah’ – both anchors largely complied with them and got back in line when Trump became displeased,” Acosta’s Substack wrote.
CNN’s Jake Tapper faced similar criticism for allowing Trump to dictate their interview’s direction without pushback. The Substack noted Tapper was hypocritical, having previously emphasized former President Joe Biden’s age as a major story.
