Trump rails against sick Republican during live NewsMax interview: ‘Not a huge fan’

President Donald Trump railed against one of his infirm colleagues on Monday during a live interview on NewsMax because, Trump claimed, the lawmaker isn’t supportive enough of his agenda.

Sen. Mitch McConnell(R-KY) has been recovering in a hospital from a fall and pneumonia for more than a month, his office announced over the weekend. McConnell shared a photo of himself in a plaid shirt, reading a newspaper with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. The photo stirred controversy online, with some MAGA commentators speculating that it was a fake image.

NewsMax host Greg Kelly asked Trump about the photo during the interview.

“What do you think of his outlook? What are you hearing?” Kelly asked.

Trump slammed the lawmaker in his response.

“Well, I don’t hear much,” Trump said. “I was never a huge fan, but he should be voting for John Thune … and Mitch McConnell is a ‘no’ vote on the SAVE Act, which, if you think about it, is voter ID, proof of citizenship, and no mail-in ballots …”

“But, he’s against that, and how can anybody be against that?” he continued.

Trump and McConnell have had a rocky relationship during Trump’s second term. McConnell was a vocal critic of Trump following the Jan. 6 insurrection, even though he voted to acquit Trump of his impeachment charges during the Senate trial. McConnell has also worked to defeat some of Trump’s legislative priorities, according to reports.
