Greece Arrests 3 in Connection With Bombings Targeting Governing Party

Greek counterterrorism police officers arrested three people on Friday in connection with recent bombings against members of the country’s conservative party that killed one person and injured several others, the authorities said.

The bombings, on July 1 in Thessaloniki, targeted the homes of a parliamentary candidate for the governing New Democracy party, Afroditi Nestora, as well as property linked to a former party lawmaker, Savvas Anastasiadis, and the head of a local party committee, Zisis Ioakeimovits.

Ms. Nestora’s 72-year-old mother, who lived in the same apartment building, sustained burns to 80 percent of her body and died a few hours after the attack. She was buried on Thursday in her native Kozani, in northern Greece, in a funeral attended by senior officials including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Ms. Nestora, who is being treated for burns, was discharged from the hospital to attend the funeral.

“The inhumane, indiscriminate terrorist attack on my home has placed my family in an extremely difficult situation,” Ms. Nestora said on her Facebook page after the attack.

Greece’s public order ministry said that three people had been arrested and that investigations continued.

State television said that the suspects included a 29-year-old man in Thessaloniki and a 26-year-old woman on the island of Crete and that they were believed to be members of anarchist groups.

In Greece, the type of makeshift bomb that was deployed has often been used by anarchist or far-left armed groups, according to the authorities.
