President Donald Trump appears to have a sinister plot hidden up his sleeve, as illustrated by his latest nominee to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to one lawyer.
Last week, Trump nominated Lance Schroyer, a former law enforcement officer in Oklahoma, to lead the embattled agency following Todd Lyons’s departure from ICE in May. Schroyer previously worked for a special unit for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and does not appear to have any experience enforcing federal immigration law, according to reports.
Schroyer’s appointment stunned Shant Karnikian, a lawyer and co-host of the “Civil Action” podcast, who sounded the alarm about it on a recent episode.
“That tells you everything about where ICE leadership is headed now,” Karnikian said.” Less about institutional competence and doing the right thing and carrying out its mission. More about loyalty and having boots on the ground and people who are hard on immigration and going after illegals.”
Schroyer’s nomination happened at a time when ICE came under increased scrutiny over the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. Araujo’s family has demanded an independent probe of the shooting after ICE claimed that Araujo had “weaponized his vehicle” against agents, a similar excuse they offered after the killing of Renee Good in Minnesota in January.
