The Education Department has released a new list of graduate degrees eligible for higher student loan limits, increasing the number of eligible programs from 11 to 29 after a federal court temporarily blocked the agency’s definition of a “professional” degree.
Nursing and physician-assistant associations sued the department in May because their graduate programs were excluded from the higher loan limits allowed for that “professional” category. The department has now added those programs and others. The department said the expanded list is only an interim step to comply with the courts and that the agency will continue to fight the lawsuit.
In the meantime, here are the programs designated as professional degrees: veterinary medicine; law; divinity/ministry; rabbinical studies; clinical psychology; counseling psychology; school psychology; clinical child psychology; health/medical psychology; family psychology; forensic psychology; clinical, counseling and applied psychology; chiropractic; audiology; speech-language pathology; dentistry; anesthesiologist assistant; physician associate/assistant, athletic training; medicine; osteopathic medicine; podiatry; optometry; pharmacy; occupational therapy; physical therapy; registered nursing; nurse anesthetist; and nursing practice.
