Australian shark attack victim continues to heal after facing ‘challenging days,’ family says

The family of Australian shark attack victim Leah Stewarthas shared an update on the 35-year-old as she continues to heal from her injuries.

In an update shared on Sunday, brother Joshua Stewart said Stewart has drawn a lot of support from messages she’s been sent while she deals with challenging days.

“We’ve been sharing some of the beautiful messages we’ve received with Leah and she’s loved them, finding inspiration from the care and love you’ve all shared,” Stewart said.

“Leah has had some challenging days but has found real strength from your kindness and support.”

The Sydney mother-of-one and local high school assistant principal was attacked by what is believed to have been a 12-foot great white shark on the morning of June 13.

She suffered bites to her arms and legs, and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Placed into a medically induced coma for nearly two weeks, her arm was amputated and multiple surgeries followed.

Stewart said his sister has been experiencing some “challenging” days, including problems with sleeping

“Since the incident, Leah has had difficulty sleeping, and on those nights she’s been reading back through your messages, not only from her family and community in Australia and her whānau in New Zealand, but also from people all across the world.

“They’ve given her real comfort and strength.”

He said Stewart’s family wished to pass on their thanks to everyone who has shared her story, messages and provided support.

The family looks forward to responding to the messages of support once a technical issue on GoFundMe – where more than $500,000 has been raised for Stewart so far – is resolved.

“Leah is beyond overwhelmed at the amazing support she has received and that her story has resonated with so many people,” Mr Stewart said.

“Thank you!”
