Donald Trump has hinted at introducing voter ID in future elections, calling for “integrity” in “crooked and rigged” elections.
It is unclear which election the president is referencing in his latest Truth Social post, though he shared a news piece calling on the “sloppiness of the elections in blue states” to be cleaned up. Trump posted, “Great! Our Elections are Crooked and Rigged. The voters know it. Must bring integrity back to Voting. START WITH VOTER ID!”
It is not the first time Trump has called for voter ID to be introduced. Just three months ago, the president called for there to be “no exceptions” to identification and moved to ban people from voting by mail except for the very ill or those in active military service.
A post to Truth Social earlier this year saw the president post, “Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!” The Brennan Center for Justice confirmed Trump would likely face a challenge in pushing this voter ID demand into law.
They told The Guardian in August, “As many as 11 percent of eligible voters do not have the kind of ID that is required by states with strict ID requirements, and that percentage is even higher among seniors, minorities, people with disabilities, low-income voters, and students.”
A previous attempt to introduce proof of citizenship to vote in elections was blocked by a federal judge in June 2025, but it appears Trump has not forgotten about his wish to introduce a stricter set of rules on voter ID.
In October this year, a federal judge in Washington ruled that the Trump administration could not change laws relating to proof of ID in elections. Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia confirmed Trump’s call for voter ID had been rejected, The New York Times reported.
Judge Kollar-Kotelly said, “Congress has never assigned any responsibility for the content of the federal form to the president or to any other individual in the executive branch with the power to act unilaterally.
“The power to alter the federal form is — and always has been — delegated solely to a bipartisan, independent commission.” Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, said, “President Trump has exercised his lawful authority to ensure only American citizens are casting ballots in American elections.”
