Word of the Day: prosperity

prosperity prɑˈspɛrədi noun

1. the condition of having good fortune

2. a state of growth with rising profits and full employment

The word prosperity has appeared in 600 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on Oct. 9 in “Pope Leo Calls on Christians to Care for the Poor in His First Teaching,” by Elisabetta Povoledo:

Church teachings since the Gospels have put care for the poor at their core, Leo wrote, and he addressed the recent sharp rise in inequality. “While the earnings of a minority are growing exponentially, so too is the gap separating the majority from the prosperity enjoyed by those happy few,” Leo wrote. He called for a rejection of the “dictatorship of an economy that kills.”
