The Best Movies and TV Shows Coming to Netflix in July

Every month, Netflix adds movies and TV shows to its library. Here are our picks for some of July’s most promising new titles. (Note: Streaming services occasionally change schedules without giving notice. For more recommendations on what to stream, sign up for our Watching newsletter here.)

‘Human Vapor’ Season 1

Starts streaming: July 2

In the opening sequence of this South Korean-Japanese co-production, a distinguished professor explodes on live television during an interview with the reporter Kyoko Kono (Yu Aoi). The culprit? A sentient fog, which soon releases a message threatening to go on a murder spree. It is left to Kyoko and the police detective Kenji Okamoto (Shun Oguri) to figure out just who — and what — this mist actually is, and what is its connection to a mysterious institution called “the White Center.” Based on a 1960 film (directed by Ishiro Honda, who directed the original “Godzilla”), the TV version of “Human Vapor” is produced and co-written by Yeon Sang-ho, one of the creators of the modern action-horror classic “Train to Busan.” It is a science-fiction thriller with political overtones, suggesting that in a society cracking under the pressures of inequality and human exploitation, something toxic will inevitably escape.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Season 1

Starts streaming: July 9

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical “Little House” books have been a staple of children’s libraries since they were originally published in the 1930s and ’40s. Many Boomers and Gen Xers fondly remember the hit TV adaptation, which aired in the ’70s and ’80s. The new Netflix series — developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine — maintains Wilder’s focus on the myriad challenges of pioneer life, following the Ingalls family as they try to make a new home for themselves in Kansas in the 1870s, overcoming the elements, disease, debt, wild animals and sometimes unfriendly neighbors. Unlike past versions of “Little House on the Prairie,” this series also focuses on the land’s original Osage inhabitants, who debate whether to fight against these interlopers or to figure out a way to live alongside them.

‘Hot Ones: Extra Heat’

Starts streaming: July 13

The popular YouTube talk show comes to Netflix for a series of specials tied to some of the streamer’s special events. The “Hot Ones” host Sean Evans will be running the show here, inviting celebrities to answer questions while snacking on food coated in spicy sauces. The first “Extra Heat” will take place in conjunction with Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game Home Run Derby (making its Netflix debut this year, after a long run on ESPN). The first guests will be Will Ferrell, Fortune Feimster, and Jimmy Tatro, all of whom are in the cast of the upcoming Netflix series “The Hawk.”

‘The Hawk’ Season 1

Starts streaming: July 16

In this sports comedy, Ferrell plays Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a veteran professional golfer known for partying hard and hitting the ball far. His best years are behind him, but the Hawk is still chasing the high of another championship, and hoping that working with an inexperienced new caddy, Sam (Feimster), will inspire him to play well enough to get back on the PGA Tour. Molly Shannon plays the Hawk’s foul-mouthed ex-wife, while Tatro plays their promising pro golfer son. David Gordon Green, a producer and director of “Eastbound & Down,” does the same on this show, which mixes elements of that raunchy sitcom with the underdog golf movies “Tin Cup” and “Happy Gilmore.”

‘Heartstopper Forever’

Starts streaming: July 17

After three seasons of intense romantic melodrama, the TV series “Heartstopper” concludes with a two-hour movie that considers what happens after “happily ever after.” Throughout the run of the show, the openly gay teen Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) worked hard to overcome his mental health struggles and the bullying at a British boys’ school, all while pursuing a relationship with Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), a popular rugby player gradually beginning to embrace his own bisexuality. By the end of the series Charlie and Nick were an out couple, preparing for the next phase of their lives together after grammar school. But in “Heartstopper Forever,” they realize that staying in love takes a lot of effort, especially in a society that is often hostile to the L.G.B.T.Q. community.
