Party animals could land in the doghouse this weekend.
Airbnb is employing anti-party technology before the July 4 weekend to combat higher-risk bookings that could lead to disruptive parties.
The technology works by analyzing bookings via reservation length, distance between the guest’s location and the listing, property type and timing. If the booking gets flagged, guests may be prevented from reserving an entire home and be redirected to private rooms rather than a huge home.
Airbnb is defining a party as anything “disruptive to the surrounding community; disruptive gatherings, open-invite gatherings or those with disturbances like excessive noise, excessive visitors or excessive trash/litering,” according to a spokesperson. A contained BBQ or birthday party should not be an issue.
Short-term rentals sometimes get noise complaints, property damage, and violent disruptions as people purchase homes specifically to throw a large party.
In 2019, a tragic Halloween party held in one of their Orlando rentals that was marketed as a “mansion party” ended in ten people being shot, five fatally. Airbnb said they would pay for funerals and counseling for survivors,
This is the fifth consecutive year Airbnb has run these defenses for July 4, and last year, more than 20,000 people were redirected from higher-risk bookings over the weekend. That included about 3,100 people in Florida, 3,100 people in Texas, and about 2,500 people in California.
Along with this, Airbnb prohibits minors under 18 from booking, and adult account holders are prohibited from booking a stay for a minor unless the adult is present for the entirety of the stay. Any violations result in the loss of an Airbnb account, cancellation of upcoming trips, or any financial liability for property damage that occurs during a stay.
“These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to help reduce the risk of disruptive parties, and we are seeing positive results,” the company said in its announcement. “In 2025, fewer than 0.06% of stays on Airbnb in the U.S. resulted in a report of a party to us.”
Unfortunately, some users still lie about their intentions when booking an Airbnb.
In March, police responded to a party advertised on social media that had 800 teenagers in a multimillion-dollar home in Celina, Texas. Police heard multiple gunshots as people dispersed. The property owners told local media that the guests who booked the home were not transparent about their plans to throw a party.
Airbnb also noted multiple features on the app to address unauthorized parties. There is a Neighborhood Support Line for residents to report a party in progress at a home they believe is listed on Airbnb.
There’s also a 24-Hour Safety Line for hosts or guests to use, and there is a noise tracking system with hosts. Hosts can receive a free noise sensor and three months of subscription to Minut’s free noise monitoring service to receive noise alerts from their home.
This is meant to keep guests aware of their noise level and prevent issues before they happen.
