First and only foreign-born treasurer in US history stands as proof of the American Dream: ‘Look at me’

Through July 4, The Post, in conjunction with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, is featuring US citizens explaining what the American dream means to them in 2026 — including Rosario Marin, the 41st treasurer of the United States. Marin, who served in the role under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2003, is the only foreign-born treasurer in the history of our country.

The American Dream — it’s an idea, it’s this amazing idea that is really true.

I was born in Mexico City. I thought we were fine. It was when we came here that I realized, “Oh my goodness, we were really, really poor.” And that is the reason why we came to this country — to seek a better opportunity.

And I knew that the only way to get that opportunity and to take advantage of that opportunity was through education. I went to high school, and when I graduated, I didn’t even attend the graduation. Then I got my bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and international business.

Little did I know that life would take a different turn and eventually I would become treasurer of the United States.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, the Supreme Court Justice of the United States, used this phrase that I love: “What lies behind you and what lies ahead of you is minute in relation to what lies within you.” I have taken that to heart. No matter what has happened in your life, no matter how difficult things have been, you’re bigger because you’re here now. And no matter what is before you, you’re bigger than that, too. You will overcome and you will rise again.

That’s been my life.

To think of what is possible — that a 14-year-old immigrant child who couldn’t even speak English when she arrived [in America], can become the 41st treasure of the United States — that is the American dream.

If you work hard, that if you believe, no matter how difficult it may seem, you can reach unimaginable dreams. Look at me.

The American Dream Video Project showcases real stories that illuminate pathways to opportunity. Featured at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD), this series is part of the Center’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. MCAAD is Washington, DC’s newest cultural institution, offering interactive exhibits and stories about achieving the American Dream. For more information, visit mcaad.org.
