President Donald Trump took to social media on Monday to react to the Supreme Court’s decisions in several cases—some of which he decried, while others he celebrated.
The nation’s highest court announced several rulings on Monday, including one regarding late-arriving mail-in ballots and another dealing with presidential authority to fire independent regulators. More decisions in high-profile cases are expected to be announced on Tuesday, including ones that center on Trump’s attempts to severely restrict birthright citizenship and states’ efforts to bar transgender athletes from participating on female sports teams.
Here are some of the major decisions the court announced on Monday, and how the President reacted to them.
Late-arriving mail-in ballots
The Supreme Court upheld a Mississippi law that permits mail-in ballots that are postmarked by Election Day but arrive up to five business days afterward to be counted by election officials.
Trump expressed his displeasure with the court’s ruling, which dealt a blow to efforts by his party and Administration to push back on mail-in voting. The President has repeatedly made false claims about voting by mail, including tying it to election fraud, and has proposed restrictions on the practice.
“In light of the tremendous loss in the Supreme Court today concerning Voter’s Rights, and the fact that ‘people’s’ votes are allowed to be counted LONG AFTER an Election is over, it is more important than ever to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” The President said in a post on Truth Social, referring to the restrictive voting legislation he has forcefully pushed for in recent months that would require voters to provide proof of citizenship and photo identification when casting their ballots in federal elections, among other changes.
In his social media post on Monday, Trump went on to say that “there is no excuse for a politician, or otherwise, to be against” the provisions in the SAVE America Act, adding, “There is only one reason to oppose — CHEATING!”
Trump has previously said that he won’t sign any bills into law until Congress passes the restrictive legislation; last week, he abruptly canceled the signing of a landmark bipartisan housing package, refusing to put his signature on the bill until the SAVE America Act was passed. But Republican leaders in the Senate have said that they don’t have the votes required to pass the bill, causing tension between the President and members of his own party.
Presidential authority to fire independent regulators
The Justices on Monday also issued decisions in two cases related to presidential authority to oust certain federal officials: They ruled that Trump can fire many independent regulators, but at the same time said this decision didn’t extend to the Federal Reserve, affirming the agency’s independence and stating that its officials couldn’t be fired at will.
Trump largely celebrated the outcome on Monday, calling it a “BIG WIN” on Truth Social and saying that it confirms “Presidential Power in our Country to remove Executive Branch Officers and Agency Appointees, or Representatives.”
“This Decision was long sought by United States Presidents, dating all the way back to the 1930s,” he continued. “It is such an Honor to be the sitting President who won this Historic and Unprecedented Ruling, one of the most important ever given with respect to Presidential Powers.”
E. Jean Carroll case
Also on Monday, the Supreme Court declined Trump’s request to take up the civil case that writer E. Jean Carroll filed against him, in which he was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million in damages after a jury found that he sexually abused and defamed her.
Trump slammed the outcome on Truth Social.
“Surprisingly, the Supreme Court declined to ‘review’ a Fake Case brought against me by a woman I never met,” he said. “I will continue the fight against this Weaponization and Lawfare Case against me, including the ridiculous claim of Defamation, with all of my power and strength. This Case is really against the United States of America, and all it stands for, and should never be allowed to happen to another President, or Candidate to be!”
The President also accused New York of having “created a Law, for an instant speck of time, going back many decades, in order to wrongfully ‘nab’ me. It was tailormade, and this Injustice cannot be allowed to stand!” He appears to be referring to a 2022 law that gave adult survivors of sexual assault a one-year period to file civil lawsuits, even if the statute of limitation was up. Carroll sued Trump after the law went into effect.
