Trump appointee’s secret war that has ‘flown under the radar’ exposed by analyst

President Donald Trump‘s appointee Andrea Lucas might not be well known to the public, but she has caused major repercussions in American life with a series of aggressive moves, an analyst argued on Wednesday.

Bryce Covert wrote in an opinion piece for The i Paper about how Lucas has enacted some of Trump’s harsh policies after the president took a firm stance against diversity, equity and inclusion policies — vowing during his 2024 campaign to remove these programs throughout his second term.

“The woman Trump appointed to carry those orders out in the American workplace has become one of the most quietly influential figures in America,” Covert wrote. “Step forward, Andrea Lucas, who heads the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Lucas has quickly taken up those dictates and toiled to turn them into reality for the country’s workers.”

The federal agency focuses on discrimination in the workforce.

“Although it’s supposed to be an independent agency, not subject to the whims of the sitting president, Lucas has asserted that the EEOC instead is ‘an executive branch agency’ and that she is ‘going to execute’ Trump’s agenda,” Covert wrote. “Lucas has been waging a quiet war that has largely flown under the radar. Trump’s notorious tactic of ‘flooding the zone’ has meant that seismic changes to the rights of Americans in their workplaces have been ignored.”

Lucas has barred employees from using chosen pronouns after Trump’s anti-transgender executive order, created a video message urging white men to report “reverse discrimination,” and brought on “questionable hires” to help execute Trump’s conservative agenda.

“Even if Lucas’s aggressive actions fail in the face of American discrimination law that protects people of colour and gender nonconforming workers, they are already creating much larger ripple effects,” Covert explained. “Employers have retrenched on their efforts to increase diversity among their workforces and are likely to become even more skittish as Lucas continues her onslaught against such programs. While transgender people can bring lawsuits on their own, doing so requires time and resources. Without the EEOC to fight for them, many are likely to give up on their quest for justice, leaving discriminatory employer practices untouched. If Democrats win the presidency after the end of Trump’s term, they can quickly change the EEOC’s leadership and oust Lucas — but reversing the cultural swings she is fomenting will not come nearly as quickly.”
