Elise Stefanik escalates feud with Mike Johnson with major legislative move

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), one of the highest-ranking Republicans in the House, took yet another sideswipe at GOP leadership and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Tuesday evening — this time with a legislative decision.

Stefanik, who is currently running for governor of New York, stated that she signed the bipartisan discharge petition to force the House to vote on a ban on members of Congress from buying and selling individual stocks. This policy has been a years-long back-and-forth under both parties, but the rest of the current GOP leadership opposes it.

Despite the discord with her fellow Republican leaders, Stefanik’s statement focused primarily on attacking Democrats.

“Throughout my entire 11 years in Congress, I have never purchased or traded a single individual stock because I believe it is unethical,” said Stefanik’s release. “Meanwhile, we have seen Members of Congress in both parties abuse their position in elected office by making millions on stock trades — no one has been more corrupt in this practice than former Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This bipartisan, commonsense, good governance discharge petition will finally crack down on the corrosive decay of a Congress that is failing the American people — particularly New Yorkers who are struggling with an affordability crisis created by [Governor] Kathy Hochul.”

However, this comes just a day after Stefanik took to X to slam Johnson for refusing to include her provision regulating FBI surveillance of federal candidates in the defense authorization bill.

“In a March 2017 open hearing, my questions to former FBI Director James Comey began the unraveling of the Russia Hoax when Comey admitted to not following proper notification procedures with his illegal opening of Crossfire Hurricane,” Stefanik wrote. “A criminal act that can never happen again. My provision will strengthen this accountability and transparency to deter this illegal weaponization and it passed out of the House Intelligence Committee in this Congress and previous ones. Yet House Republicans continue to get rolled by the deep state due to opposition by Jamie Raskin.”
