NJ Transit touts bizarre ‘feel-good’ World Cup story after mom and son missed train to MetLife amid travel chaos

NJ Transit is being mocked after touting a story of cops having to ferry FIFA World Cup visitors to MetLife due to travel chaos as a bizarre “feel-good” story.

A mom and her son heading to the “New York New Jersey Stadium” in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to watch Brazil take on Morocco, missed their last train — and broke into tears.

“Good news story: A woman and her son were running late at Penn Station New York and missed the last train to the stadium. She was visibly upset and in tears after realizing they would miss the event,” NJ Transit said in a post on X Saturday.

“The Deputy Chief became aware of the situation and made a command decision to assist. ESU responded and provided a ‘rescue’ transfer to the stadium using a light truck, ensuring the pair could still make it to the event,” the thread continued.

“Upon arrival, the mother was overcome with gratitude and again brought to tears—this time with relief and appreciation!” the thread concluded.

Many users were left baffled if not angry at NJ Transit’s decision to portray this case as a happy story.

“Doesn’t seem like a good news story,” one X user wrote.

“Things must be grim in New Jersey if this is what they’re calling a ‘good news story,’” wrote a second.

“My tax dollars should not be responsible for this Mom’s poor planning,” added another.

It comes as thousands of soccer fans leaving Saturday’s Brazil-Morocco match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, were stuck in gridlock for hours.

Surrounding roads remained choked with traffic at around midnight, more than three hours after the final whistle, as frustrated supporters waited in crowds at the designated rideshare area at Meadowlands racetrack.

“I live in America and I’ve been to big events, but I have never seen this before. It’s hard to believe we’re in America right now,” Brazil fan Aline Kubik told NJ.com.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, my frustration is a 10. This is awful,” said Gerardo Alfaro, another Brazil fan.

It comes despite NJ Transit hailing how it “successfully moved 21,578 fans from today’s match at NYNJ Stadium via bus and rail in 90 minutes,” in a post on X.

NJ Transit and the New Jersey state government has been under fire after announcing that round-trip tickets to the Meadowlands would cost $98 for the World Cup.

NJ Transit did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
