Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) mistakenly directed criticism at Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) during a House Judiciary Committee hearing, called to investigate a federal indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center.
GOP witness Alveda King disrupted Democratic questioning by shouting, “Stop killing the babies and cutting the penises off!”
To which Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) said she hadn’t been aware that penises were being cut off babies.
This is when Gooden mistakenly replied, “I’ll send you a copy, Ms. Crockett, so you can learn more about this.”
Crockett corrected him pointedly, “Just for purposes of the record, know that that side doesn’t have too many women, so we may all look alike, but that was actually my colleague.”
Balint interjected, “I take full credit.”
Gooden apologized, admitting he assumed Representative Crockett was responsible for the comments.
Defendants argue the Southern Poverty Law Center secretly paid more than $3 million to informants embedded in extremist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan.
