Terrifying video shows a woman plunging down a manhole after the cover unexpectedly gave way.
The chilling security footage from Brazil emerged just two weeks after Westchester grandmother Donike Gocaj, 56,died from falling down a manhole in Midtown Manhattan.
The footage from Sunday’s scare shows Fabiana Rosa, 32, staring at her phone while walking down a quiet street in Rio de Janeiro soon after getting off a motorbike taxi.
She steps on a covered manhole — just for the metal cover to flip up, sending her plummeting straight into the drainage system below.
The motorbike taxi driver who had just dropped her off is seen immediately running back to the scene as passersby rush over to help. Emergency services eventually managed to pull her to safety.
“I thought I was going to die, because the water was hitting my chest and the hole was very deep,” Rosa told Brazilian media after being taken to a nearby hospital.
She was struck by the manhole cover as she fell, suffering injuries across her body.
The cover was incorrectly positioned after two would-be metal thieves allegedly moved it during the night, according to local reports.
Security footage from around 2 a.m. the previous night reportedly shows two men removing the manhole cover before attempting to reposition it without properly securing it.
Westchester grandmother Gocaj, 56, the victim in last month’s shocking incident in Manhattan, could be heard screaming that she was dying after dropping down the 10-foot hole outside Cartier on Fifth Avenue.
Complaints about open manholes have nearly doubled across the Big Apple this year, public data shows.
