‘Spiraling’ Hawaii candidate charged with ‘terroristic’ threats after gun incident: report

A Hawaiian congressional candidate was charged with “terroristic threatening in the first degree” after holding county workers at gunpoint, according to reports.

Democrat Kirill Basin brandished a gun during an argument inside a Maui County government building on Friday, the Honolulu Civil Beat reported.

Although police weren’t called for an hour and a half, Basin was arrested by the Maui Police Department and charged with Terroristic Threatening in the First Degree, according to the Honolulu Civil Beat’s reporting.

“The Maui Police Department will not compromise public safety, and incidents of this nature are taken extremely seriously,” the department’s Chief John Pelletier told the Civil Beat.

Basin had been “spiraling,” as police had escorted him out of a town hall and his executive assistant had filed a restraining order against him the same day as his arrest, the Civil Beat reported.

His executive assistant, Jared Agtunong, sought the restraining order because Basin had been harassing him with a series of profane texts and calls, according to the Civil Beat.

“I did not answer Basin’s phone call, but he left a message telling me that I’m a piece of trash, said I should think of my family,” Agtunong told the Civil Beat. “Basin wished me luck with prison, then at 9 p.m., Basin’s text said ‘you’re f—–.’”
