Former Vice President Mike Pence speaks candidly on his rupture with Trump

During the 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference, hosted in Michigan, former Vice President Mike Pence disclosed he and President Donald Trump rarely communicate.

Pence was asked by local news anchor Roop Raj, “When’s the last time you picked up the phone and said, ‘Hi, President Trump, it’s Mike?’”

The former Vice President acknowledged, “It’s been a while,” but clarified that he congratulated Trump and the first lady after the 2024 election.

Pence described their post-presidency contact as minimal, compared to their daily interactions while in office. During their 2016-2020 term, they spoke “every day, almost all day long, early, late,” shared the former Vice President, characterizing their working relationship as positive.

However, Pence emphasized the relationship “didn’t end the way I wanted it to,” referencing his refusal to block the 2020 election certification despite Trump’s demands. Pence affirmed he remains committed to supporting and defending the Constitution, a position that fundamentally divided the two men on January 6, 2021.
