Great stores make you think about who you are — and who you could be. They reward the effort of leaving the house with the promise of finding a new style or silhouette, or replenishing old favorites. Through helpful staff, well-lit fitting rooms and transporting atmospheres, great stores nurture a comfort with taking risks and wearing what you please.
To spotlight the destinations in America that are the most satisfying and surprising places to shop for clothes (and more), The New York Times Styles desk has compiled a list of the 50 best stores across the country, all of which were visited by reporters (sometimes more than once).
Now it’s your turn. Tell us about your favorite small boutique that sells everyday staples, or the vintage warehouse you swear by for heritage denim.
A few guiding principles: All stores must be in the United States. We’re more interested in independent or small businesses, not big-box stores or those for global brands. We welcome stores that sell new clothes, as well as secondhand vintage and thrift stores. We’re also open to specialty stores — places that sell a specific type of shoe, say, or focus solely on luxury resale. When thinking about what to suggest, ask yourself: Would someone think it was worth it if they went out of their way to visit, even if nothing was bought?
After we read through all of your fabulous and fashionable responses, we hope to use many in future shopping coverage.
We will not publish any part of your response without following up with you first, nor will we share your contact information outside of The Times newsroom or use it for any reason other than to get in touch with you.
