Pro Football Hall of Fame apologizes after incorrectly reporting death of Lions legend Lem Barney

That’s one way to flop.

On Saturday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame released an apology after it incorrectly announced the death of former Lions cornerback Lem Barney at the age of 80.

“Based on conflicting information regarding the reported passing of Lem Barney, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is rescinding the email sent earlier today,” the Hall of Fame said on Saturday. “The Hall has not been able to confirm such news independently. Please accept our apology.”

Barney’s son spoke to the Detroit Free Press and confirmed his father is alive.

“OK. Talked to Lem Barney’s son. He said Lem is alive. He said he Lem saw on Thanksgiving, started getting messages asking about his dad last night. He said he talked to Lem’s nurse today, had her send a selfie, heard his voice in the background. ‘He’s good … He is alive,’” Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press posted Saturday on X.

A second-round pick out of Jackson State, where he tallied 26 interceptions across three seasons, Barney played for the Lions for 11 years.

In his rookie season, Barney was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and earned his first Pro Bowl nomination after totaling 10 interceptions for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

He was also later named to the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 1960s.

The two-time All-Pro played in 140 games and amassed 56 interceptions and 17 fumble recoveries, along with seven touchdowns.

Barney was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992.
