JD Vance’s awkward moment draws mockery online

Vice President JD Vance experienced an awkward moment Friday during the Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service when an intended applause line failed to land.

Vance said, “Put violent criminals in prison as opposed to letting them out of jail,” then paused for applause that barely materialized.

Social media users drew comparisons to Jeb Bush’s 2016 presidential campaign flop, when the candidate awkwardly asked voters to clap after a similar failed applause line.

Journalist Aaron Rupar posted the clip with the caption “Please clap,” referencing Bush’s infamous moment on Bluesky.

Online reactions ranged from sympathetic to mocking, with sportswriter Grant Brisbee describing Vance as “the most juiceless man in history” and comic artist Patric Reynold expressing hopes he becomes the 2028 Republican presidential nominee so he can be “absolutely stomped.”
