Misfortune follows CBS anchor as he continues struggling to cover Trump’s visit to China

CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil faced another setback covering President Donald Trump’s China visit when a Taipei hotel forbade him from using his room as a broadcast studio due to his on-air commentary of Taiwan.

Dokoupil was already reporting from Taiwan after failing to secure a Chinese visa, forcing him to cover the Beijing summit from over 1,000 miles away. The hotel manager was reportedly “appalled” by Dokoupil’s coverage of the China-Taiwan conflict while Trump met with President Xi Jinping, according to Status.

Dokoupil subsequently moved his operation to Liberty Square and disclosed the incident on Thursday’s broadcast.

“The threat of China is felt all over this island,” Dokoupil said on air. “One woman slapped her husband’s arm when he started talking to us about independence. Another woman asked that her words not be used, telling us ‘We cannot speak freely.’”

The expulsion represents the latest embarrassment for CBS News under Trump-friendly editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, installed despite having no television news experience.

Dokoupil’s ratings have collapsed to record lows of 3.4 million viewers.

Television news executives attribute the network’s deterioration directly to Weiss and ownership, citing a fundamental miscalculation in their news approach.
