A fiery on-air blowup erupted Friday night on CNN’s “NewsNight” after former Democratic lawmaker Bakari Sellers slammed MAGA figures for refusing to distance themselves from white nationalist Nick Fuentes.
The moment sparked a heated, minutes-long clash with podcast host Katie Miller, wife of White House adviser Stephen Miller, who accused CNN’s Abby Phillip of hypocrisy in a tense back-and-forth that quickly consumed the segment.
Sellers kicked off the confrontation by arguing that Fuentes still commands influence inside the GOP.
“The fact that we’re even mentioning Nick Fuentes, he’s 4’11, he’s misogynistic, and he’s antisemitic, but yet he is somebody who has the pulse of the Republican base right now,” Sellers said.
Miller immediately snapped back and quickly found herself in a heated confrontation with the “NewsNight” host.
“Nick does not have the pulse of the Republican base. It’s what Democrats want to say to divide the Republican base,” she insisted, defending Vice President JD Vance for refusing to criticize Tucker Carlson’s decision to invite Fuentes on his podcast.
But the real fireworks came alive when Miller turned her attention to Phillip.
“You had Jennifer Welch on your show very often, and you never pushed back,” Miller said, referring to the liberal podcaster who has criticized Miller’s husband. “She called my husband a white nationalist – that is no different than Nick Fuentes going on Tucker Carlson’s show.”
“It’s not, and you should admit it,” she added.
Phillip immediately hit back: “Wait, hold on. How is it similar? It’s not remotely similar at all. Nick Fuentes sits around and says that he likes Hitler. How is that similar?”
“Excuse me!” Miller said as she insisted it was the same. She went on to argue that if Fuentes has a right to express his views, then Phillip shouldn’t object to him appearing as a guest on Carlson’s show.
“It’s not different, Abby, it’s not,” Miller said.
The segment ended with Phillip saying it was the Republican Party that has to decide how it moves forward.
“Do they care whether or not someone who has a loud voice in their party is bringing on somebody who is encouraging, encouraging neo-Nazism?” the CNN host said. The statement prompted a free-for-all as the panel erupted before Phillip threw the segment to a commercial break.
