A Democratic Congresswoman issued a dark warning on Saturday after the Supreme Courtdelivered “a devastating blow” to Americans in its latest decision.
Last week, the Supreme Court invalidated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in its opinion in Louisiana v. Callais. The ruling effectively paved the way for states to racially gerrymander their election maps, according to some experts, and states like Louisiana and Alabama have already leaped at the prospect of redoing their maps.
Rep. Yvette Clark (D-NY) told Rev. Al Sharpton on MS NOW’s “PoliticsNation” that the Supreme Court’s ruling is “a devastating blow” that will impact Americans for generations to come.
“This is a devastating blow,” Clark said. “There’s no doubt about it. We can’t sugarcoat it. This is something that will impact communities for generations to come, if Congress does not act.”
“So we have a very serious matter before us,” she continued. “And it’s going to take state-by-state litigation, voter registration at a massive level, to overcome what these folks have cooked up. And massive turnout following that.”
