Road Closures and Traffic Delays Expected for Charles and Camilla’s Day in New York

Heightened security in New York City during a visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Wednesday will involve intermittent road closures and traffic delays throughout Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department.

Police officials did not provide specific details about the security arrangements, but urged commuters to use public transportation.

The royal couple’s scheduled stops include a visit with young people in Harlem, the 9/11 Memorial and the New York Public Library’s main branch, where Camilla plans to donate a Roo doll to fill out the library’s Winnie-the-Pooh collection.

New York City hosts hundreds of foreign dignitaries every year, and royal visitors are hardly uncommon. There were no indications that security measures would be even more stringent than usual for such an event, though this trip comes just days after a man from California was charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump at the White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday at the Washington Hilton.

The police and federal authorities routinely provide protection during state visits, and the department’s Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau monitors potential danger. So far, there are no known credible threats to the royals, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter.

Charles visited New York several times before being crowned in 2023 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. During his first trip to the city in 1981, more than 1,700 city police officers guarded the then-prince. An additional 300 members of the State Department and Secret Service steered his detail away from demonstrations during calls for the independence for Northern Ireland.
