Congressman scolds GOP over chaotic failed hearing: ‘Couldn’t organize a two-car funeral!’

As House Republicans scramble to address a series of challenges and looming deadlines, the GOP-led House Rules Committee failed Tuesday morning to reach agreement on a procedural rule governing debate on upcoming bills, a breakdown Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) slammed as “beyond incompetent.”

“After waiting around all night for Republicans to make a deal – with themselves – on a procedural rule for the week, Democrats showed up to the Rules Committee for an 8am meeting,” McGovern said in a statement shared on social media.

“Unsurprisingly, when we showed up, we were told there is still no deal. Their chaos is only matched by their incompetence.”

Major bills are largely required to pass through the House Rules Committee before reaching the House floor, during which the committee adopts what’s known as a procedural rule: a resolution that dictates how bills will be debated. In this instance, House Republicans were divided on the manner in which Tuesday’s calendar of bills should be debated, and failed to reach an agreement.

McGovern apparently came prepared for the hearing, having written a lengthy statement addressing the body’s chair, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC). While McGovern did not get the opportunity to read his statement in committee, he instead posted his entire statement on social media.

“Madam Chair, the way this place is being run by your so-called leadership is beyond incompetent. This is no way to run a banana stand, let alone the Congress of the United States of America,” reads McGovern’s prepared statement.

“And I mean this with no disrespect to you or your staff, but the way this majority is behaving is embarrassing for the institution and it is bad for the country. You guys couldn’t organize a two-car funeral! It’s pathetic. You have [a] razor-thin majority. You’ve been in total control for 16 months now. And you still can’t get it right.”
