  • The outfit was more feminine and brighter in color than many of the looks she’s worn this term.

Spring is in the air in Washington, DC.

The Trumps stepped out of the White House on Monday to meet with King Charles and Queen Camilla, who are visiting the US to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

While walking across the South Lawn and touring the White House beehive, Melania Trump stood out from the group thanks to her seasonal ensemble.

She wore a double-breasted suit jacket and a pencil skirt, both in a shade of butter yellow.

The color and style choices were a subtle departure from the dark menswear pieces that have become her standard this term.

Melania’s suit was designed by Adam Lippes, an independent American fashion designer. She wore it with an assortment of diamond rings and snakeskin heels.

Though her outfit was simple and elegant, it was different from the more basic ensembles worn by her husband and guests. The president and King Charles both wore navy-blue suits, and Queen Camilla wore a white dress with black floral accents.

While she embraced high-end fashion and expressive pieces between 2017 and 2021, Melania has since made menswear her go-to style during Trump’s second term in office. She’s worn a mix of pantsuits, cropped trousers, and sharp blazers in recent months, typically in darker, neutral shades.

So what inspired her latest look? It could be the season. What better time to wear yellow than in late April?

It also could have been influenced by a major fashion-industry trend. Butter yellow became the “it” color in 2025 and has remained popular since. It was all over spring/summer 2026 runways and has been worn this year by celebrities like Emma Stone and Bella Hadid.

There’s also a chance that Melania was referencing a member of the British royal family with her two-piece set. The first lady’s yellow ensemble was strikingly similar to an outfit Princess Diana wore to Wimbledon in 1995.

Photos show Diana at the tennis event wearing a butter-yellow blazer with thick buttons and sharp shoulder pads, paired with a matching pencil skirt. The main difference is that Diana accessorized her look with a pearl necklace, statement earrings, sunglasses, and a gold watch, while Melania kept her jewelry minimal.

Regardless of the inspiration, one thing is certain: Melania’s butter-yellow outfit could signal yet another shift in her first lady fashion.
