Airlines across the United States are canceling flights to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration's mandate to reduce flight capacity.

The FAA ordered flight capacity to be reduced by 10% in 40 busy markets starting on Friday. The cuts are intended to maintain safe skies as the government shutdown drags on and air traffic controller shortages persist, causing continued delays.

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, over 4,000 flights in the US had been canceled as of 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Over 500 airports had at least one flight canceled, according to Cirium data.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest, had the most flights canceled, at 433. That was equal to about 14% of all those scheduled across different US airports.

Major airlines have said they expect most of their flights to go ahead as planned and are advising passengers to continue checking their flight status.
