Tiny Love Stories: ‘No Hugging … and Definitely Nothing Lewd’

A Knock at the Door

Several weeks before Thanksgiving my mother, a physician, suffered a massive heart attack and for weeks was kept in the I.C.U. At 15, I was too young to visit her. Doctors said she probably wouldn’t make it. My father, needing her like air, disappeared in his camper van. I stopped going to school and hid with my dog, afraid social services would knock on the door. Instead, a knock heralded my friend Rick whose mother — knowing I was vegetarian — had made me an entire, meatless, Thanksgiving feast. I’d never even met her. Yet her kindness saved me from despair. — Rebecca J. Beker

Who Wants to Win a German Mother?

First episode: Meeting Andrea’s parents as she announced we were getting married — news they didn’t see coming, especially since she’d never mentioned she was gay. Andrea’s mother eyed me like an American sequel to World War II. German rules were strict and baffling: no hugging, no first names and definitely nothing lewd. Sunday lunches became my lightning round — dumplings like helmets, beer mugs like trophies, pleasantries like spears. For years, we faced off politely, handshake after handshake. Then one Christmas, the finale: She hugged me, briefly, awkwardly, but with affection. I’d captured the German mother’s heart. Love wins.— Lois Bromfield

The Loudest Love

My father’s love showed in his cooking, care and playful demeanor. In a family that often talked over one another, his soft voice was easily dismissed. He never imposed his will. If others spoke unkindly, he stayed quiet. His favorite words: “Let it go.” All along, I mistook his gentleness for weakness. Last month, at his funeral, I realized Dad’s quiet required immense discipline — his greatest act of love. I learned that love doesn’t always need to be shouted. Sometimes, it doesn’t even need to have voice. Love can be strongest lingering in silence, in acceptance of those dear to us. — Tarundeep Kaur

Sweet Confidence

Punta Chivato, Mexico, a couple of days after Christmas, 1987. Karl and I had just gotten married. Doctors had told us that AIDS would kill him by Thanksgiving. We got engaged anyway. Then, on that sunny winter day, we stood together, vowing hand-in-hand to entwine our destinies, come what may. Two weeks later, he’d be in the hospital. In a year and a half, he’d be gone. But at that moment, under the warm December sun, we were eternal. We are eternal. The secret he is telling me is forever safe. I don’t remember it. I don’t need to. — Nan J. Bauer
