A 2-year-old boy has been found unharmed Wednesday, hours after authorities began searching for him after his mother was fatally shot in Northwest Washington, D.C. police said.
The boy, Royce Hawkins, had last been seen in the 500 block of Kenyon Street NW at about 7 p.m. with his mother, who was killed later that night, said interim D.C. police chief Jeffery Carroll.

At about 11 p.m. officers responded to the 600 block of Kenyon Street for reported gunshots, Carroll said. They found a woman in an alley who had been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carroll said video showed the woman was involved in a verbal argument in the alley with a man, who then shot her and fled.
Homicide detectives responded to the area. It took some time to identify who she was, Carroll said at a news conference Wednesday; once they did, they learned that the woman’s 2-year-old was unaccounted for.
Officers canvassed the area and went door-to-door with fliers, Carroll said.
D.C. police said the department will provide additional updates on the investigation later Wednesday.
