Political analysts and observers were outraged on Sunday by a new report detailing the arrest of a military spouse by President Donald Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
The New York Times reported on Sunday that Trump’s ICE had recently arrested Annie Ramos, a 22-year-old college student with no criminal record, just days after she married a U.S. citizen, Army Sergeant Matthew Blank, who is training for deployment. Ramos and Blank told the outlet that they were working with a lawyer to finalize Ramos’s legal permanent residency, which is granted to immigrants who are married before they receive their green card.
“Even those with a prior deportation order, often issued when they were children, are not typically detained and are able to adjust their immigration status, experts said,” according to the report.
Political analysts and observers reacted to the report on social media.
“When this shameful chapter of our history has ended, we MUST atone and make amends for what we allowed to happen in our home. No longer are we the land of the free. I hope one day we will remember how to be the home of the brave,” Gaynelle Gosselin, a behavioral health advocate, posted on Bluesky.
“This is not who we should be, but ICE is so desperate for stats [that] they detain a woman who is legally applying for her green card, a scholarship college student who teaches Sunday School,” legal expert Joyce Vance posted on Bluesky. “Trump would have us believe he’s taking criminal aliens off the streets. It’s a lie.”
“Seems neighborhoods need to organize for tactical peaceful counter response to such thugs,” Reverend Miguel Rivera of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy & Christian Leaders posted on X. “Many alternatives are available to let them know the American people are tired of being harassed and mistreated.”
