Trump’s Iran speech leaves analysts and audiences scrambling for meaning

President Donald Trump delivered his first national address on the Iran war five weeks after it began, claiming the U.S. has “nearly completed” all objectives while offering little substantive new information.

Trump called on NATO allies to purchase American oil or “take it” from the Strait of Hormuz, and described Iran as one of the world’s great powers.

Political analysts and observers expressed confusion and criticism on social media.

Sarah Longwell, publisher of The Bulwark, called the speech “insane.”

Journalist Matthew Yglesias noted Trump’s stated plan to end the war and reopen the strait amounted to “not do either of those things.”

Petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan concluded “there is no plan for the Strait,” while White House correspondent Andrew Feinberg questioned the address’s purpose entirely.
