Politico announced on Sunday that one of its executives, Jonathan Greenberger, would become the publication’s next global editor in chief.
Mr. Greenberger, 42, will take over from John Harris, who co-founded Politico in 2007 and returned to the top editing job in 2023. Mr. Harris, who had indicated at the beginning of this year that he would step down when a successor was found, will be elevated to chairman.
Mr. Greenberger joined Politico in 2024 as executive vice president, reporting to both the chief executive and editor in chief to help build Politico’s brand and rethink its structure for growth. He was previously the Washington bureau chief for ABC News and executive producer of ABC’s “This Week.”
“My job is to push our journalism further and faster than ever before,” Mr. Greenberger said in a statement. “By investing in our journalists and embracing the technologies that extend their reach, we will accelerate and expand the agenda-setting and market-moving coverage our audience expects.”
He will oversee all editorial for the publication, which now has bureaus in Washington, New York and Sacramento, as well as abroad in Brussels, London, Paris and Berlin. Politico announced in February that it would be expanding to Australia this year.
Politico’s chief executive, Goli Sheikholeslami, said: “At the end of an extensive search process, Jonathan’s new and unconventional thinking convinced all of us that he was the person most likely to see possibilities that others do not and bring our forward-looking vision to life.”
Politico is owned by the German media conglomerate Axel Springer, which bought it for more than $1 billion in 2021. In January, it laid off about 3 percent of its staff, which Mr. Harris described at the time as cuts aimed at making the newsroom “more tightly aligned to the publication’s strategy over the next several years.”
Mr. Greenberger’s first day in the new role is May 1.
