Cole’s French Dip shuts doors for good after 118 years in LA

After more than a century of greasy‑spoon glory, beloved institution Cole’s French Dip finally shut its doors Saturday, closing the book on one of Los Angeles’s most legendary eateries. The self‑proclaimed birthplace of the French dip sandwich is now officially a chapter in history.

The first diners for the epic farewell event arrived early and by midmorning the line wrapped around the block, a testament to the restaurant’s enduring place in the city’s culinary memory.

Owner Cedd Moses and team say the closure was inevitable on the back of rising costs, pandemic-era pressures, labor shortages and dwindling downtown foot traffic. On Saturday, fans didn’t show up just for the nostalgia.

“There’s a lot of restaurants that have been closing, legacy establishments closing in LA, and I just want to support and be a part of that culinary community,” customer Bryson Pintard told The Post.

“This might not be the greatest sandwich you ever had in your life, but what you’re getting is a taste of the Hollywood glamour that it once was.” Founded in 1908 inside the Pacific Electric Building, Cole’s built its legend on roast beef nestled in soft bread and dunked in savory jus, a happy accident also claimed by downtown rival Philippe’s.

The wood-paneled dining room, late-night bar and decades of Hollywood lore made it a stop for generations of Angelenos and visitors. Traveling from Ranch Cucamonga, customer Alexandra Pinedo said the sandwich “tasted like a hug in a way.”

Her partner, Edgar De La Torre, described the food as “classic, simple ingredients and timeless flavor.”

Cole’s is hosting a “Farewell Weekend” Saturday and Sunday, raising funds for the Independent Hospitality Coalition.

Despite the doors closing on Sunday night, there’s still a small chance Cole’s may rise again.

Multiple buyers have expressed interest in purchasing and potentially reopening the landmark.
