A Secret Service agent accidentally shot himself in the leg on Friday morning at Philadelphia International Airport, officials said. He was assigned to the former first lady Jill Biden’s detail, according to a person familiar with the incident.
The Secret Service said in a statement that an on-duty agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury “following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon” at the airport.
The statement, which did not identify Dr. Biden, said the shooting did not affect “the protectee’s movement, and they were not present at the time of the incident.”
There were no other reported injuries, and the agent was in stable condition at a hospital, said Nate Herring, a spokesperson for the Secret Service.
The agent was traveling in an unmarked vehicle when he shot himself at about 8:42 a.m., the Philadelphia Police Department said in a statement. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, the police said. There were no disruptions to airport operations.
A spokesman for Dr. Biden referred questions to the Secret Service.
